1 Minute Negotiation Tips
Talk or keep quiet? Sit facing the window? Should we speak first? Here are five tips that can help you take those snap decisions and get you on the way to mastering some of the skills which characterize a successful negotiator. 1. Silence is a weapon. By keeping quiet when someone asks you a question that you can't answer, you'll often find that they feel under pressure to answer it themselves. If you're a member of a negotiating team, remember not to jump in if the other person on your team is creating a silence. 2. If you're sitting in a swivel chair, be aware that if you're nervous about what you are going to say you'll give it away by moving around too much. 3. Make eye contact. It's an important way of showing that you're an assertive negotiator and demonstrates that you're confident about what you're saying. If you look away at a key point, such as reacting to a price quoted by one of your suppliers, you'll look uncomfortable and uncertain. 4. Don't let yourself become over-reliant on one negotiating tactic. What works in one relationship or culture might not always work in another and if you only have one tactic, you'll have nothing else to fall back on. 5. Work together. Negotiators often work best in pairs but discuss your tactics before going into the negotiation to make sure that your behaviour complements each other.
